Colchester Castle, Firstsite, and the Dutch Quarter are all within a 5-minute walk of each other. Park once at Priory Street and explore the entire historic core on foot.
Book Roman vault tours when buying Castle tickets
General castle admission does not automatically guarantee a spot on the popular Halloween Roman vault tours. Book your tour addon slot online in advance.
Colchester Zoo gets busy during half-term
The zoo reaches maximum car park capacity between 11:00am and 1:00pm on dry days. Arriving at 9:30am opening guarantees stress-free parking near the entrance.

More about this guide
As Britain’s oldest recorded town and first Roman capital, Colchester is uniquely placed to host atmospheric Halloween and half-term festivities. Beneath the ancient castle lie the vaults of the Roman Temple of Claudius, where real witch trials were held during the 17th century.
Beyond the castle, Colchester Zoo puts on one of the county’s biggest autumn events with Shriek Week, while the award-winning Firstsite arts centre provides weatherproof contemporary crafts and £3 family cinema screenings.
